Allotment fencing

Hi just popped down to our allotment and the fence is down. I'll need to replace it but don't want to spend a fortune. Next time I'm there I'll check the posts if they're all ok I'm tempted to get rid of the past holders random bits of wood and just put in stock fencing. Do you think that will be strong enough?
We do have a rabbit issue, but I've got around that the last couple of years with raised beds and veggies they don't like! Grin

What do other people on the allotment do? I think one of the most invaluable things about having an allotment must be access to other peoples wisdom and experience. (sighs with allotment envy, the waiting list round here is so long I would be pushing up the veg from underneath by the time I got one)

The fence round the site,or between plots?
If the former, surely that's the site owner's responsibility.

If the latter, what's the fence actually for? Just to demarcate one plot from another? Do you need a fence?

Do you have any pallets that you could use to take pieces of wood from to repair it? We have a chicken wire fence that separates us from our NDN and we were going to replace it with a proper fence. However, its costly and allotments tend to be 'make do and mend' so after having cleared loads of dead brambles, we are going to plant clematis montana to run along it. If you do go for wire, bury it 6 inches if you can to keep the bunnies out.
Even if you put a wooden fence back up, its still worth burying pieces of wire netting, they soon get fed up of burrowing.

Is a fence a requirement? Or just something you like?

Pallets?
