What can I plant against my fence for privacy?

Our new neighbours moved in last summer and have cut down all the trees and lilac that gave us a modicum of privacy in our garden.

We have a long narrow garden and I some of the lilac looks like its self seeded so may well grow to enough of a height to give us some privacy but I want to plant something this spring that will grow pretty quickly.

Our neighbours are very nice so it's not an issue of wanting to keep them out!

I have looked at bamboo but I wonder if conifers might be a better idea?

I'm a novice gardener so don't know where to start really!

Leycesteria Formosa, known as Pheasant Berry grows pretty quickly in one season. It’s easy to prune and keep to a manageable form.

Just put up a property fence

Thanks @Beebumble2. I'll have a look.

I did think cherry laurel might be another idea.

If you get bamboo, make sure you get the clumping stuff, not the running stuff. The previous owners of ours put in the wrong one, and we are having to spend countless hours digging it up - so far has destroyed the shed, the patio and two fences by growing up through it, and has taken over half the garden!

A lot of fast growing plants tend to be invasive and can end up taking over. Don't plant leylandii. Laurels are fairly fast growing and can be kept in check with regularly pruning/trimming. They're also evergreen. As is lonicera nitida.

Fast growing stuff doesn't stop growing when it reaches the height you want, it carries on growing and the bigger it gets the faster it grows.

Don't plant leylandii conifers or the climber russian vine.

Thanks all, it's really helpful.
