Wind and sun from same direction

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if any more experienced gardeners can offer any suggestions. My garden is open on 3 sides, which face to the North, West, and South.

The way local buildings are situated means that strong gusts of wind are tunnelled through my garden from the south, which is also (again because of the location of other buildings) where most of the sun gets through.

The previous gardener planted a row of trees along the south side of the garden (presumably to help with the wind), but this makes the garden very shady.

Can anyone suggest ways I could get more of the light, while still shielding from the wind?

Thanks.

I think any wind break is going to cast some shade. The best wind breaks are semi-permeable, there's a selection on the RHS website.

It might not be coming from the direct south - the prevailing wind in the UK is SW, but it could be altered by the tunnelling affect you describe. If you can find out where it blows, you could orientate your wind break accordingly and hopefully you still have some sun coming from the south.

Thanks 79andnotout, that's exactly the sort of information I needed - I couldn't even think of the word for it!

Can you reduce the height of the trees so you just have a hedge as a wind break and the sun will come over the top?

Happy to help :)

I have a similar problem at my allotment, although it doesn't involve buildings, just a bloody strong wind that keeps taking panes from my greenhouse!
