Where can I buy houseplant potting mix that doesn’t contain bugs?

I need to repot my houseplant (a monstera deliciosa) as the pot I bought it in is tiny. However, I looked at some houseplant potting mix on Amazon and there seem to be lots of reviews from people warning others not to buy because the soil contained bugs! Where can I find a bag of potting mix that will definitely be bug free? I really don’t want lots of little bugs in my home. Can anyone advise?

Wilko, Homebase, B&M etc.

Some supermarkets are starting to carry seasonal gardening stock now too.

Thanks. Are they guaranteed to be bug free? Why do so many bags on Amazon seem to have bugs in them? Confused

I even just checked Ocado and the reviews for houseplant potting mix on there say the soil was infested with spider mites! I might just use soil from the garden.

I used coconut coir a lot which is dried and no issues so far.

Could oven the soil for a bit to kill anything living.

Years ago I think they used to radiate the soil used, which would kill off bugs, but they can't do that. Someone asked a question on Gardeners' Question Time a few years ago, asking if they could heat compost in the oven, in a casserole dish, to kill them off instead. I don't think you could get it hot enough and would risk germinating them instead tbf.

I've heard of people microwaving their compost...

Thank you, I will look into this brand!

Never thought compost might have bugs living in it!

Garden soil relies on a myriad of bugs and microorganisms for its structure and fertility, so not surprising that compost will have soil-dwelling organisms. I'm surprised at the reports of bugs in bought compost, and would wonder whether the person complaining was mistaking the origin of bugs that had arrived from elsewhere. Many plant pests can fly (even greenfly have winged forms) and that's the most likely mode of arrival.

If you can get to a local garden centre, as they are still open, get some from there & they would make amends if it was found to contain bugs. Some local places will deliver too.

Please don't use garden soil for your houseplants! That is far less likely to be suitable and is more than likely to have seeds, bugs, and any kinds of things that may not be good for houseplants. You need proper houseplant compost with nutrients and drainage material. Most come with added perlite or bark or whatever to help your plants along, and of the many hundreds of bags of houseplant compost I've bought over the years, I've never once found bugs in there!
You can buy houseplant compost in any garden centre, and in may supermarkets, plus places like B&Q. Look for specific houseplant compost too, not the kind for outdoor pots. And get peat-free if you can.
