Inspiration and plant ideas please

We have a tumbledown old greenhouse that is lovely in a wooden weathered way.

There is a raised bed to one side that has veg in. In front on the greenhouse is a small border. I put annuals (cosmos) in last year but growing then from seed was a lot of effort. At one end of it next to the pathway I have pots with herbs in.

So I’m looking for planting ideas for a metre deep bed in the front (it’s a side on greenhouse) and also planting ideas for the short stone and brick path to the door. It’s quite shaded but it would be nice to have something between the stones.

The garden is an old walled one if that makes any difference.

Thank you!

Where you had your Cosmos, why don’t you just sow mixed seeds directly, such as Love in a Mist, Californian Poppies, Clarkia, Candytuft, Calendula and Clary. You’ll probably find that the Cosmos seeds from last year will grow.
In my courtyard I have Erigeron and Mimulus growing. Sometimes Lobelia seedlings pop up from previous years.
Fennel grown for the fronds is pretty and pops up year after year. There are also some small Persicaria that spread nicely.

I meant between the paving, in the courtyard.

Perrenial geraniums are a safe bet

A couple of my faves for their long(spring to summer) flowering season and attractiveness to bees are wallflower (Bowles Mauve) and Knautia. For later in the season some dwarf Rudbekia maybe or Asters?

tumbledown old greenhouse ... wooden weathered ... old walled garden
This is all sounding quite rustic and lovely. Would an old-fashioned (but useful!) thing like rhubarb fit nicely into the scheme for the bed in the front.

Rhubarb in the raised bed is an idea. I like the idea of bee friendly plants in front. Fennel is a good shout too as I love the fronds. I don’t know some of the other plants but I’ll get looking and see. Sowing straight into the ground sounds good although we’re in Scotland so that may have an impact...

The paving is a bit trickier as it’s in the shade of a flowering current. I’m not sure how wildflowers would do?

Thanks!

Do you want to keep the flowering currant if it is causing shade problems? We had one years ago; I seem to remember that the flowering season isn't that long and the perfume is horrible so - unless you have some new, improved variety - do you want to consider removing / relocating it.

Hi, @senua yes I like it. It’s beautiful when it flowers
