Black fly on beans

Hi all,

Last summer my climbing french beans and runner beans (both in same bed) were decimated by black fly... it's a new but fairly small veg bed in my back garden, I'm not a pro but have grown them successfully in the past...

I love growing them as they look so pretty but not sure I can be bothered with that again as it was quite sad really to not have hardly any crop.

Could it have just been a bad year? Or was I doing something wrong potentially? Any tips on how to get rid of or prevent blackfly?

Are there any varieties which are more resistant or less attractive to the little buggers?

Asking now as I'm ordering seeds and not sure whether to bother with beans this year. Hoping someone with more experience will be able to offer advice!

If your talking beans like broad beans they you should cut the tops off as the beans are ripening to eliminate black fly which is a well known issue otherwise.

It's not something I've ever had problems with on runners or French. I'd give them another try, and abandon them only if it becomes evident it's a problem you're going to have every year.

I have a vague memory of marigold deterring black fly? I've never had them on runners (and not a big broad bean fan I'm afraid)
