Is it too late to plant bulbs?

I'm new to gardening and forgot I had them. Blush. We are in the South of England.

Not at all. Choose a day that isn’t freezing and plant them up. They need to be planted at a depth that is equivalent to their size; ie if they are three inches big plant them at a depth of six inches.
If you have any grit/gravel/sharp sand handy they like a scoop of that in the hole. That don’t like soggy bottoms!
They will bloom a little later than normal but will settle into the regular schedule for any other years they come up. Enjoy!

Thank you so much @PerseverancePays! That is really helpful. They may have to have soggy bottoms though as I have no sand.

I'm worried my husband will mow them down before they flower - I have a mixed selection of bulbs, do you think they would grown in a shaded area with tree cover? I'm guessing some will as I've seen bulbs around trees.

You are so welcome. I think the bulbs will flower under trees as long as the trees aren’t evergreens. Could you pinch a bit of gravel from a drive for them? Spring bulbs are so cheerful, a real boost.

For 3 years in a row I've planted my spring bulbs at Christmas or New Year, seems to work for me! I don't bother with sand/grit and don't lose many (if any) bulbs despite my clay soil. I tend to find they're just relieved to finally be in soil and grow! Blush

Great, thank you, I will get digging!

If you are worried about them being decapitated you could plant them in pots. Put broken crocks in the bottom of the pots to help with drainage. If you don’t have compost then use your garden soil, it will make the pots heavy though.

For a 'natural' look, try standing with your back to the planting area, and gently toss the bulbs over your shoulder. Plant them where they land!
