I have just opened my Christmas present from a very dear friend, though not a gardener. It’s a lovely present, and I am very grateful for such a thoughtful gift . It’s bulbs, really lovely spring bulbs, about 100 of them , which will be beautiful - BUT I now have to get out in the freezing cold and plant them, soon because they are spiking up - and remember where all the bulbs I planted in the autumn went, though I think most of these will be destined for pots rather than the borders.

They also gave me the Monty Don book ( I said they were a lovely friend) so I will be torn between comfy armchair gardening and the real thing.

And next week is supposed to be absolutely freezing.I think Monday will be double thermals day!

Very happy Christmas to all the gardening MNs, in 2021 may we have warm days and rainy nights, butterflies, bees , birds and ladybirds in abundance, plentiful crops, fox free lawns, un nibbled borders, lots of cups of tea and time to sit and enjoy the fruits of our labours.

Happy digging.

Ps I was also given a compost turner. A Happy Gardener here.

Just to be clear, I forgot my smiley face thing after the first paragraph, I’m not moaning, honestly, it’s a lovely present from a dear friend!

@viques get a load of pots and bags of potting compost inside and merrily pot them up in those. Enjoy them in pots this year then plant out next year! Simples.

@Ruralbliss Yes, I think that is what I will do, I have spare compost in my spare bags of compost bin, and although it will be cold it won’t be as cold and wet as outside soil. And the result will be amazing as you say for years to come, either in the pots or transplanted.

( I have spoken to my friend to thank them, it sounds as though I was lucky to get away with 100 bulbs, I think my friend was almost infected with the buying fever that comes on all of us when we look through plant catalogues. Quote” I never knew there were so many different sorts of bulbs” unquote! Grin)

If you put them all in pots, the whole lot can be done as "armchair gardening" Grin

Remember to bring the compost in for a few hours to warm up before you plan to start - for the sake of your hands as much as for the bulbs
