Is this a heuchera or something else?

Found this in an overgrown bed, is it a heuchera?

Doesn't look right for Heuchera to me.

My plant app says it's Fringecups/Tellima Grandiflora.

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 12/12/2020 17:03

Ooh - that looks nice and RHS says is freely self sows so could conceivably have landed from a neighbouring garden. Definitely haven't ever had a mature one in my garden before, but I'd never noticed a heuchera there either Grin

I have a colony of fringecups in a dark corner of my garden which arrived unaided. I think mine are a more uniform green though - not that I've looked at them recently.

laudemio · 12/12/2020 18:24

Looks like my pelargoniums when they get chilly.

Poppins2016 · 12/12/2020 18:39

I reckon it's a heuchera - looks like one of mine!

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 12/12/2020 18:54

I think pelargoniums would have been killed off by the frosts by now?

As long as I have positively ID-ed these as not-weeds I will move them (because I am going to be putting a playhouse where they are growing right now) and just wait and see what happens with them in the spring. How nice Smile

Another vote for Tellima from me

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/12/2020 08:11

The colouring on the veins suggests Heuchera to me rather than Tellima, but the leaves are very similar. There is a Tellima that has reddish leaves, but I think (though I may be wrong) that it's more of an all-over red. There are a great number of garden varieties of Heuchera.

But you can be assured that it's not a UK wildflower.

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 13/12/2020 10:57

Great - thanks! I'm happy with it being either! Though secretly hoping for Tellima 🤞

I would said that is Heuchera, I have a few different types

NanTheWiser · 14/12/2020 20:10

It looks like my Tellima.

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 14/12/2020 20:40

I need to move it, and I'm wondering when is the best time to do it? Also - if it's a heuchera I'd like to put it in the trough by my front door which has some other heuchera already in in, but if it's a telling I've read that they get up to 75cm so maybe too tall for the trough (though it's a big one it hasn't that much space as already got quite a few plants in. Would it be ok to move these to a pot until I've identified which they are before deciding whether to plant in the trough or the front flower bed?

The Tellima height I think is including the flower spike. Tellima and Heuchera are closely related and very similar in growth habit, so if you can grow Heuchera there you can grow Tellima there.

Daisydoesnt · 15/12/2020 13:28

It REALLY looks to me like a geum. We had a beautiful one with apricot coloured flowers and the habit and leaves was exactly like that. Sorry have just moved house so can’t photograph foliage for you OP.

EnormousSexyCrimeUnit · 15/12/2020 14:23

If it is a Heuchera I would be careful if you're going to plant it in a container, as they are much more susceptible root damage from vine weevil grubs in pots than in your borders - I speak from bitter experience!

You can water in some nematodes as a biological control which should help protect the plant. I believe there are certain times of the year when it's best to do this, so it's worth checking.

DaffodilsAndDandelions · 15/12/2020 14:35

That's a Heuchera. The height will be including the flower spike which is on a very very dainty stem with quite non-descript flowers. They are mainly grown for foliage.

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 15/12/2020 23:03

Ah, thanks all. The heuchera currently in the trough dont appear to be being troubled by munching grubs, but perhaps I shouldn't push my luck so I may plant elsewhere! Will it be ok to move them now, or should I wait till spring? I'm not doing the playhouse until spring so there's no rush (other than my own impatience to get on once I've decided to do something Grin)

OP posts:
MereDintofPandiculation · 16/12/2020 15:01

No, not Geum. Geum has a "threeness" about it, whereas this plant is clearly 5-loved. Geum's are actually pinnate, although often with an enlarged central lobe, which may look like the whole leaf.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/12/2020 15:03

Will it be ok to move them now, or should I wait till spring? The theory about spring planting is that they're about to burst into growth, and can repair any root damage done through the moving.

BewareTheBeardedFatMan · 16/12/2020 18:08

That is very useful to know! I think I'll wait then (not keen on digging claggy clay soil in the souring freezing rain...)
