After a major bout of ivy removal, our neighbours have erected a fence.

I want to take out the remaining scrappy hedge bits and plant something that will train against it whilst not completely obliterating the bed in front. Ideally, evergreen, I'd love pyracantha but the thorns are too much.

Would a garrya be able to sit flat, or would it spread forward over the bed?

All thoughts welcome!

Unless you go for a climber, then anything shrubby might have a tendency to grow forwards away from the fence anyway.

A garrya should be all right as they have fairly upright growth, but don't be too tempted to plant it right up against the fence, about 18" away at least would be best.

That's great, thank you.

I thought this was in baby names Grin I’m so glad it’s not!

If you like Garrya, have a look also at Itea ilicifolia. I find it quicker than garrya, easy to train and doesn’t get the spotty leaves Garrya always seems to suffer from.
