Hello. What's this wild plant, please?
I first found it as a ground cover on the edge of a deciduous wood. I then spotted it again under a hedgerow. Both times in the autumn so I have no idea about the flower.
It is about 4" tall. The leaves are variegated, heart-shaped, have round teeth and are opposites. It throws out runners, like a strawberry.

Dead nettle?

kittiefisher · 01/12/2020 11:44

Don't think dead nettles send out runners, do they?

It's in the dead nettle family. Probably the variegated form of Lamium maculatum, with pink flowers. Could also be Lamiastrum galeobdolon, yellow archangel, with yellow flowers, but I think the leaves of that are more pointed. Both are causing concern in the wild as they are showing signs of being invasive.

This is what I was worried about. It's very pretty and could be useful ground cover but I don't want to introduce a thug to the garden.

It's not a thug in a garden context. It has fine roots and is easily pulled up. It doesn't spread by root fragments or by seed to any extent, just by the runners. It's a problem in the wild because no-one is doing any weeding. I'd have no hesitation in growing it in a garden.

Oh, good! I'll wait to see what colour it is and then decide which border to put it in.
Thanks.Smile
