Planting in winter

Is there any plants that I can plant now? I’m a novice gardener and have just had my garden landscaped so would like to add some plants. I’m thinking evergreen a mix of ground cover and small hedging. Would anything survive at this time of year?

Now is a good time to plant, and it's the only time to plant things that are bough bare-rooted instead of in pots.

Plant trees and shrubs now. Also some wintery perennials will be fine, hellebore, lungwort, beautiful bee food for early spring. Also bulbs such as snowdrops and bluebells can go in now.

Heathers, Hellebores , spring bulbs . Infact anything still looking good in garden centres can be planted.
What you do need to be mindful of is where you plan to put it. For example , don't plant it in an area of your garden that gets the full sun and is red hot all day if the label says semi / or full shade .

Thank you for your replies I like the look of the Hellebores. What could I plant now to use as a low level hedge/screen? Also can ornamental grasses go In now?

The only things that can't go in now are thing that aren't hardy, things that would die over winter (as opposed to thing that will die back down to ground level over winter and re-shoot in the spring). So avoid planting anything described as an annual.

It is also worth avoiding planting on days when the soil is either frozen or when it is absolutely soaking wet clods.

stella1know · 30/11/2020 19:12

Yep, don’t plant or use any water when a frost is due. The water freezes the roots and causes more damage than dry frost.

This time last year I planted a hedgerow using a pack from the woodland trust, it will take ages to get established, in fact it is barely visible but it felt good to plant for the future. I have underplanted with primrose and stuck loads of crocus and narcissi bulbs at the front

Great tips thanks for the advice.
