Are these horse mushrooms and edible?

I'm 99% sure these are edible, but just checking incase I've missed something as I'm not British and never eaten 'wild' mushrooms before. The gills are pink, then turn brown like regular mushrooms and have a skirt/shape like horse mushrooms. Found on a grassy area in to MIL's field. Anything dangerous I've missed???

Honestly? I really really wouldn't risk it, even experienced experts get it wrong 😬

I would never ever advise someone to eat any fungus on the basis of a photograph. Try to find an expert who can look at the mushroom in real life. And be aware that there is at least one species of Agaricus (in the same genus as field and horse mushrooms) that is poisonous.

If you do decide on the basis of your research to eat this or any other fungus 1) don't eat all of them - leave at least one for the hospital 2) don't all eat them, leave one person to call the ambulance if required.

There are some UK fungi which are edible and good, and which can't be confused with poisonous species. Best to start with them.

Oh no no no no no

These posts make me sweat.

If you are not 100% certain, don't do it. Buy some button mushrooms like the rest of us!

I don't believe any reputable mushroom expert would advise anyone to eat any fungi based on a picture. I would leave well alone. ☠️

Yep. Another one saying don’t risk it. If this was France, you could take them to the pharmacie for verification, but we’re not in France.

Titsinknicks · 03/11/2020 00:28

Don't do it you lunatic!

MotherFeeder · 03/11/2020 14:13

There is a great facebook page - called Mushroom Spotters UK who may be able to identify these for you.

bluebluezoo · 03/11/2020 14:15

Don’t do it.

If you’re wrong, it’s not just a bit of sickness, it’s death.

Is it worth the risk?

UniversalTruth · 03/11/2020 16:18

I work in healthcare - fit, well, young people have died eating the wrong mushrooms. Even if the hospital know what they were, they might not be able to cure you. Depending on the part of the country you are in, there might not be ambulances or ITU beds anyway.

What everyone said - please don't do it.

Thanks for the advice. They were thrown out a few days ago.

I'm glad to hear it. Stick with Sainsbury's Wink

I would happily eat fungi that I had harvested if:

a) I was confident about my identification (and that would be from a good reference book, and double checked in another, not from Google)

b) I was confident that there was no poisonous or inedible fungus that looked at all similar.

In practice, that limits me to a very small subset of the many edible and good species that we have.

movingonup20 · 04/11/2020 16:57

I recommend a mushroom foraging course when they resume after Covid- there's delicious mushrooms wild but you need to be trained to be safe

AndIquote · 04/11/2020 17:10

Janet Street Porter did a write-up in the i last Saturday about the joys of picking field mushrooms (with a warning of poisoning tagged on at the end).

Cut a bit off and check it dosent stain yellow. If it's not a stainer it looks very much like a horse mushroom.
