Succulents

Lidl are currently selling succulents in a little glass dome (just the glass base, the dome cover and a succulent lying on the glass base).

If I buy one do I need to do anything with it, does it need soil and how do I water it please?

This is such a bad idea, succulents are mainly arid plants, often native to South Africa, so need as much sunlight as possible, and air movement. I despair when I see them sold in this manner, as they are doomed to die.
If you did buy one, I would advise potting it up in a gritty potting mix, putting it in your sunniest spot, and at this time of year, watering only when completely dry.

Are you sure it is a succulent plant? As so-called “air plants” (Tillandsias) are often sold this way too, and need quite different treatment. They are small rosette plants with greyish fuzzy leaves.

Hi Nan, yes they had a ticket saying 'Succulents £1.99' and were on a trolley just outside the door. They looked exactly as you describe.

The little glass domes with the individual succulents inside did look very pretty and that's what made me notice them, but now I understand more since reading what you have written, thank you for replying.

You’re welcome! So many plants sold in supermarkets are often incorrectly labelled - they are bought in from wholesalers ( often from big nurseries in Holland or Belgium) with generic labels, so it’s very easy to be confused.

If they are air plants (Tillandsias) they are actually quite easy to keep, but need rain water applied as a mist regularly. They don’t need to be potted, as they don’t grow in soil, but up in trees or, as often seen, on telegraph wires (Spanish moss) in their native countries.

Yes - surely if they have no soil currently they must be air plants? I may have to head to Lidl as I am after some Grin
