Help with tree identification

I saw the most beautiful tree whilst out walking at the weekend- the leaves were literally glowing! I think it might be an Acer but I'm not sure what type, does it look familiar to any of you clever people? I'd love one for my garden.

Are you able to get a close-up of a leaf, OP? Also the bark if possible.

superram · 26/10/2020 14:57

From a distance it looks like an acer but hard to tell without a leaf pic. I have one I love but they aren’t good for birds as they can’t nest in them.

FLOrenze · 26/10/2020 18:11

It could me Amelanchier.

Wildwood6 · 26/10/2020 19:00

Thank you so much @theconstantinoplegardener and @superram, I'll take some more pictures tomorrow and will upload.

The first picture and I think the second show lobed leaves, so not Amelanchier. I agree maple. The other thing with that leaf shape and good autumn colour is Liquidamber, but I don't think it's quite right for that. Have a look at Acer rubrum.

Hi @theconstantinoplegardener, please find some more pictures attached- thank you so much!

Thanks so much for all your suggestions everyone, it does look like it might be a variety of Acer I think...

Yes, definitely a species of Acer. You'll need @yamadori to tell you which09

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/10/2020 15:02

But not Acer rubrum - too many lobes to the leaf

theconstantinoplegardener · 28/10/2020 15:21

I think it might be Acer palmatum - possibly the "Osakazuki" variety, as they can be a very fiery red in autumn. Have you noticed what colour leaves it has in spring/summer? "Osakazuki" has green leaves in summer.

Wildwood6 · 28/10/2020 15:23

Thank you so much @MereDintofPandiculation! I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know! I've never really paid much attention to Acers before but I'm in love with the colours of this one. Hopefully @yamadori will come along and solve the last details of the mystery!

Thank you so much @theconstantinoplegardener! No, I haven't been past in the spring/summer unfortunately- I'll have to revisit then and see if I can get to the bottom of it!

If the tree is visible from a road, you could look at "Streetview" on Google maps and see if the tree was in leaf when the Google camera car photographed it.

Wildwood6 · 28/10/2020 15:40

Its not visible from the road unfortunately- but that's a brilliant idea for future reference @theconstantinoplegardener, thank you so much, I'll remember that!

It has seeds! Pick some and grow your own. Grin

It's definitely an acer of some sort, but there are literally thousands of new cultivars so pretty much impossible to identify a specific variety, but I'm inclined to think it might be Osakazuki as well. It is quite a big tree for an acer palmatum so it is relatively old, which would considerably narrow down the choices.

Fame at last Blush

I don't have a giant book all about Japanese maples on my lap, oh no

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/10/2020 19:41

It has seeds! Pick some and grow your own. Yes! One of the biggest bits of gardening fun I had was growing a packet of mixed Acer seeds. Got quite a few to planting out size that I then had to make space for. Sadly a snakebark succumbed to fungus, but I have two other snakebark species, one of which is now about 20ft tall with a trunk4inches diameter, green with white stripes. And it has seeds. So pleased! My first grandchildren Grin
