Japanese maple tree in east facing garden

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice regarding a Japanese Maple (red acer tree?) I think it's called.

I'm a bit of a gardening novice if I'm honest. I'm moving to a new house soon and it has a true east facing garden.

I would love to plant a Japanese Maple tree as I think they're beautiful trees. However I don't know whether one would be happy in an east facing garden.

The garden is quite long so I think we will still get sun at the far end in the evening.

Does anyone know if this type of tree would be okay in an east facing garden/how much sunlight it would need/location etc.

Many thanks!

Ours suffered being in sunny spot in south facing garden and we had to give it away. They like dappled shade or partial sun position. Your garden may be fine but avoid v sunny or windy position.

Both I and my NDN have japanese maples (which is what comes up if I google "red acer") in a N facing garden. They like dappled shade, so definitely would not appreciate a S facing garden. I think they should be fine in an E facing garden, but avoid a windy spot.

I think they dislike early morning sun if they have dew on the leaves. My protected south facing and not protected north facing acers seem happy

I’ve kept them in North, South and West facing gardens and they have all done well, so I’m sure an East facing one would be fine too. Once established they are sturdy wee trees.

I have a load of them, my husband is slightly obsessed, too many in my view, and we have a large garden, they basically are positioned in every which way and they are all fine. The only ones who suffer are the recent ones he has put into an area with too dry soil and too much shade, under the canopy of a larger pine tree. The rest don’t care.

They are thirsty so keep them watered.

I have a large potted acer and in the previous house which was east facing I put it in what I thought was a prime spot, at the end of the garden with lots of sun and not protected from the wind. It looked a bit leggy, very green but not in a good way. The past year it lived nearer the house so had partial shade and was protected from the wind. I also watered it lots. If regained most of its lovely shape and went a vibrant red. I suggest identifying the bit of the garden with partial or dappled shade (in our east facing it did well on the right hand side, so sun in the early afternoon) and you should be fine.

We have one in a east facing garden, it's half way between the house and shed and gets shelter from the shed. It's doing well. We had two but the other one died, odd as it was the more sheltered one of the two.
