Bulb planting. I hate it.

But I love the look of them so will persevere.

How can I make my bulb planting painless? I'm talking about girthy daffodil bulbs which need to go deep, in grass, not beds where the soil is lovely and soft.
I used a bulb auger drill attachment last year which was rubbish.

I'd suggest removing a square of turf - cut round 4 sides with a spade, then slide spade under, about 3 inches deep, and peel the turf off. Then dig and plant in the relatively root-free soil thus revealed. Flip turf back on top. Repeat.

(You'll probably find that the first few turves have 3 bulbs underneath them but by the end of the first 50, you'll be planting in fives or even sevens).

Just keep reminding yourself that you're not going to do this every year.

@Mere thank you, I've now planted dozens of daffs this way in such a short space of time.

MereDint’s method is by far the best - even the best of the bulb planters require a lot of heft.

You need a bulb planting auger, something like this www.crocus.co.uk/product/_/bulb-planting-auger/classid.2000026704/

It has been a complete game changer for me. I hated planting bulbs before but now it is almost fun! It is also good for 'digging over' small areas of ground.

I just read your post properly! Why was your auger rubbish? I found the best method was to move the drill slowly up and down to go to full depth otherwise it would get stuck. Once I had the technique sorted it was great.
