.... Looks a bit like a more refined bistort. Leaves reminiscent of polygonum family.

Many thanks in advance.

@Pinkshrimp almost, but not quite, the inflorescence is more conical tapering towards the top, and leaves borne alternately on the flower stalk.
Thank you, though.

Certainly looks like a Persicaria species, but would not like to hazard a guess at which one.

Hopefully MereDintofPandiculation will be here shortly with a possible ID

Thank you, @Beekeeper1

I think the OP is right as far as you can be from a photo. It's not fully in flower yet - once the buds are opened it may look less refined Grin. I think it's that the buds at the top are younger and therefore smaller that is giving the conical look. I can't from the photo see anything to suggest it isn't Persicaria bistorta.

Persicaria is of course in the Polygonum family.

@MereDintofPandiculation

Grateful for your input. The pic with the pencil is upside down BTW Blush

The flower buds at the top end are dark pink and indeed not open yet. I'll keep an eye on how it develops further. Thanks again, all.

I thought that MereDint would come up with the goods!

It still doesn't look quite like bistort, but definitely a form of persicaria.

Top flowers still aren't quite open, are they? As you say, definitely Persicaria, and I would have said Persicaria bistorta. Except now they've revised the taxonomy and put it into its own genus, so it's now Bistorta officinalis.

JayeAshe · 01/10/2020 11:44

Nope, with a "normal" bistort I'd expect all the flowers to be open more or less together, but this one is just not complying. I shall be monitoring as it matures.

Thanks, MereDintofPandiculation , for your continued interest and for the taxonomic info
