Hello!

Need some help picking a shrub/bush/small tree for my front garden.

Requirements are:

  • must tolerate lots of sun
  • not huge
  • flowers and maybe scent
  • evergreen
  • indestructible-ish

Thanks you all very much!

Choisia would fit the bill, not very exciting though, if you're looking for a centrepiece

Daphne, Hebe or cotoneasta.

Escallonia do well in full sun and can be pruned so they don’t grow huge. They can have small pretty white or pink flowers.

Hypericum (St John's Wort). They're evergreen, and have large yellow flowers all summer. Or perhaps a Philodendron - very easy (on many councils' preferred planting schemes as they are so low maintenance), with white, heavily scented flowers.

I was also going to say daphne

Hi - I would second choisya, escallonia or cotoneasta. I am probably doing something wrong but daphnes never seem to do well for me which is a shame as I love them. I'd say it might also be worth considering pittosporum or an evergreen viburnum.

Amalanchier. Not sure of the spelling but it's a gorgeous small trees

Rosemary?

Chilean Guava. We had a few in our last garden. Beautiful scented flowers and delicious berries (not that I ever got to eat any, the dog would pick the bush clean). Happy in full sun. They grow biggish, but can be pruned.

I’ll second or third choisia. I really, really love the smell of the foliage when you brush your hand over it. And while yes, the standard version isn’t very exciting, there are a few new varieties with more delicate leaves now too as well as a golden one (which I’m not so keen on).
