Is my Japanese style garden dream doomed?

I absolutely love Japanese maples, however I have very heavy clay soil, I really want to plant a Japanese style area in my garden but is it doomed before I start? Is the only way for success digging in tons of top soil? (Which is something I really want to avoid if at all possible) or would planting with ericaceous compost around the root ball sufficient? I really don’t want to spend out a lot of money on plants to see them whither and die. Is it a non starter?

I've a 20 year old Acer doing beautifully in a pot. Similar soil to you and didn't want to risk it.

We're on clay and have a japanese maple doing well, as do next door. I don't know whether we count as "heavy clay", although on the tight maps the land is marked as "Clay Field". The real killer seems to be draughts - I lost one which was on the corner and therefore in the wind.

Thanks for the replies, it’s a difficult one, think I will risk planting a couple and see how they fair, I want to plant fairly mature ones so it could be an expensive mistake, hate my soil it’s so restrictive.

I think they can do ok on clay soils, but you could just improve the area where you plant them with a pocket of ericacous compost and lots of compost and manure to lift the soil.

Or plant them in pots. They do well in containers.

Thanks Mrs Golightly, I have a few in pots which are doing well but wanted to plant these in the ground as it’s on a slope, will give your tips a go.

Interesting. We are on quite an exposed spot at the top of a hill and have a 20y+ acer in clay and very poor soil. No idea how it's been done (house is fairly new to us) but it your site is certainly not a non starter.

Is your soil acidic or alkaline? We have heavy clay soil but it is acidic and drains well as we’re on a slope. I am planning on planting my acers soon. According to RHS they just need acidic and well drained, the clay itself doesn’t seem to be a problem.

We are thinking about planting ours on small mounds, for a more Japanese style. If you did this, with some leaf mulch dug in, they would drain much better anyway.

We have a load of acers, my husband has a thing for them, all in heavy clay soil doing well.

I think you need a lot more than acers to make your garden look Japanese though, acers are very common in the Uk.

I’m not sure Peajotter, I just though clay was a no go so it’s good to hear there is a chance they will survive, will have to test the soil I think. Good to hear they are thriving Bluntness, yes I agree needing more than acres, I was going to add skyrocket conifers and some cherry blossom as well to add to effect but like your husband I have a thing for maples! they are so architectural and striking I think.
