Green tomatoes

I have three tomato plants (lockdown first attempt) which are covered in green tomatoes. I live in Yorkshire. Is it past hope that they’ll ripen now?

I brought in a couple that had fallen off plants and stuck them in a bowl of bananas but that’s had no effect.

Put them in a dark place with the bananas such as a drawer.

I'm in Yorkshire. I they're in a greenhouse, they'll ripen through to end Oct. Though I would have though you have some hope outdoors (even though we're forecast the coldest August Bank Holiday since records began). Leave them on the plant for as long as you can. If the plants are in containers, see if you can bring them indoors.

For tomatoes that have already come off, just be patient. I had them ripening up till Christmas indoors last year.

I had a big bowl to which I'd add green tomatoes, so it was all colours through to orange ... but they never seemed to get to red. Then I discovered DS was snaffling the ripe ones as he went past. Never mind. Better than Haribo.

Nah, it seems late because we’ve had such a rubbish August, but there’s plenty of time for them to ripen. Mine are under glass in Scotland and I leave them on the plant until the first frost, to get as big as possible, then put them in a drawer with a banana after that.

Another question, to jump on the thread. Do people remove the unset flowers and small tomatoes to help the plant focus on the larger ones? Or doesn’t it help? Thanks!

I was just considering doing that @peajotter. In past years I haven't, and have ended up with loads of green ones at first frost. RHS certainly suggest limiting fruit set to allow maximum energy going into the fruit you allow - but I've no idea is that affects ripening or just size.

This is what I did - snip off the top of the plant to stop upward growth, snip off any remaining flowers and a lot of the excess leaves. All the plants energy is then concentrated on ripening. Then hope for sun. This is working for my outdoor tomatoes - I’m on the south coast though.

I have two tomatoes on my plant (Alicante), don't know how big they get and they just aren't changing colour!

I’ve done an experiment today, thanks for your advice everyone.

I already cut the tops off a month ago. I’ve removed leaves and flowers for some, just flowers for a second group, and left the last plant untouched. I’ve counted the tomatoes (200 bigger than my thumbnail, on five plants!) and will let your know how it goes.

Most of mine are still green.
Not in a greenhouse.
I have read I can ripen them by picking and putting them in a paper bag.
Does it have to be paper?

Leave them on the plants as long as you can.
Pop an apple on the ground underneath to give off ethylene
if they do not ripen at all, make green tomato chutney

Does this work for peppers too? Planted them late but only wanting baby ones, just would prefer yellow to green. Should they be in the dark too?

Peppers are very different
they do not ripen after picking
I gave up growing them as they need too much water and heat for the UK

We have an almond tree. Every year the crop goes to waste as I dont know what to do with them, or even if they are safe to eat. Any help? Can we eat them? I know some kinds are poisonous

Shell and roast and then store in a jar with some sea salt to have at Christmas

I followed ChristmasTrees advice and radically trimmed. I cut the top off each plant, removed a lot of the leaves and nipped off the few remaining flowers. I have progress this week...one tomato is now orange! Fingers crossed! I’ve also researched fried green tomato recipes just in case as from experience in the USA they are nice if not massively healthy.

I've had to pick mine (they were supposed to be yellow plum tomatoes) as the plants started to get blight - and I have made pasta sauce with half and half green/yellow tomatoes and also green tomato curry. The pasta sauce was ok, but not the best sauce ever - I've frozen loads and think I'll use it when cooking mince or in soup
The curry was very nice though and not anything like the unapetising picture here would suggest - I did cook it for longer than the timing given in the recipe though - www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2010/09/dinner-tonight-green-tomato-curry-with-potatoes-and-garlic-recipe.html
