More importantly, are there any vegetables I cant grow in pots..?

I’ve bought lots of pots (different sizes, the smallest are 30cm diameter) and lots and lots of veg/herb seeds

tomatoes

FinnyStory · 20/08/2020 20:42

It's a bit late to be starting now for this year, but I have carrots, beetroot, lettuce, French beans, rocket, tomatoes, courgettes, spring onions, cucumbers and lots of herbs growing happily in pots. They need to be good sized pots though and you do need to feed them.

I've done potatoes in pots in the past, just for fun and they do well, but it's not really worth the cost of the compost.

We have heaps of tomatoes in pots. We also have chillies and peppers. We grow cut and come lettuce in a pot, and we have a planter where we grow cos lettuce.

Don't think you could grow runner beans in a pot. They get too big. Have grown cucumber and pumpkin in pots, but they tend to travel.

I put a slice of a tomato I was having for lunch one day, in a tub with compost, more as an experiment. It grew into a plant and now has about 8 tomatoes on it. Theyre still green though as I did this a bit late but just goes to show theres no need to buy seeds.

I had cherry tomatoes grown from half a tomato from the fridge for my lunch today. It was planted during lockdown when it was only essential shopping and I was feeling resourceful. I had either 8 year out of date seeds or the tomatoes in the fridge, so I planted them both and they've both done very well.

we have tomatos and cucumbers (cucamelon) in pots.
plus some herbs and cut & come again salad. salad leaves grow quickly, you can start some now. it will grow until the first frost.
chillies are great.
at a push bell peppers and aubergine.
courgette and pumpkin grow huge.
potatos grow well in buckets, but it's a lot of effort for something that costs very little to buy.

I've been sowing this lot recently for autumn -
Dwarf beans
Chard
Perpetual spinach
Pak choi
Lettuce
Turnips
Beetroot

ThomasHardyPerennial · 20/08/2020 21:09

Forgot to write kale. Have fun growing op!

TiddleTaddleTat · 21/08/2020 08:35

You can grow runner beans in a large pot or trough if it's deep enough. Ours are doing very well - although the crop might be bigger if they were in the ground. Still, they have got to about 6-7ft high and we've got lots of flowers and plenty of beans.

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/08/2020 08:48

Runner beans, Climbing French beans, broad beans, sugar snap peas, purple sprouting, kale, tree cabbage, beetroot, swiss chard, lettuce, radish, any of the chenopodium vegetables, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, chillis.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/08/2020 08:50

Lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, baby potatoes...

SerenityNowwwww · 21/08/2020 08:51

Yes chillis, garlic too. Peppers. Experiment!

First timer here, trying to grow some winter veg in pots.

My friend grows spinach in pots and it seems to do well.

2 weeks ago I planted in pots:
Chard - doing really well
Mixed come again Salad - the same
Rocket - same
Broccoli - same

Potatoes (winter) in a massive tub. seem to be flying, but a load of soil is required. Won't bother again.

I have kept a supermarket Basi plant going for 5 weeks now! Took cuttings, which were placed in water to root. Just planted in small pots. Basil is a spring plant I gather, but hoping I can grow these in time to freeze leaves over winter.

I want to plant spring onions in pots for Feb/March and garlic for next year too.

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/08/2020 09:16

I think you might struggle with parsnips.

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/08/2020 09:17

I have kept a supermarket Basi plant going for 5 weeks now! Basil is easy from seed, and with many different varieties.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/08/2020 09:20

I have loads of herbs growing from cuttings. They grow like stink if you let them get long roots in water first. I haven’t tried tomatoes this year - but I usually get a nice crop. Probably dearer than the shops but ‘I made it’.

I grow lettuces from the stumps of shop bought ones and that is satisfying!

I might try this as I gather seeds may be superior to supermarket bought herbs. My basil's looking a little leggy now, hence the cuttings.

Does anybody grow oregano? I use it lots in cooking.

TheFaerieQueene · 21/08/2020 09:27

Courgettes work well in pots.

middleager · 21/08/2020 09:57

@TheFaerieQueene

Courgettes work well in pots.
Do you need a massive pot/tub like for potatoes? I'd like to grow them, but worried I'll end up with marrows!
pinkbalconyrailing · 21/08/2020 10:09

the courgette plant itself grows very big, so it needs a big pot as otherwise it would topple.
or a grow bag or compost bag you plant into directly.

pinkbalconyrailing · 21/08/2020 10:10

courgette is not one for a balcony or if you have limited space.

Borderstotheleftofme · 21/08/2020 10:12

So many veg choices!

Am I right in thinking I can’t have any delicious asparagus?
I love asparagus but don’t have bed space, only pots.
My largest pots are around 45cm diameter so quite large.

At the moment, I have rainbow chard and kale growing and cucumbers too but I don’t think they got pollinated because each and every baby cucumber dropped off!
I don’t mind too much though, I hate cucumbers, only bought a packet because the kids like them.

I have chives, chocolate mint, herb fennel, sweet Cecile and bay all growing well too

And a pot of wild rocket and sorrel!

I have spring onions, brocolli, carrots, tomatoes, chilli, beetroot, radish, peas, runner bean, lemon balm, oregano, mache, mustard leaves, sage all waiting to be down.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/08/2020 11:07

I think asparagus needs space. My sister grows it and it looks crazy - long rows of spaces out sticks! She also has borage here and there which looks lovely in salads. And roquet.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/08/2020 11:07

Rocket? Roquet?

TiddleTaddleTat · 21/08/2020 11:55

We have grown all veg this year in huge plastic pots. It was an investment at the start in the pots, compost, and manure, but well worth it.
Best successes:
Beetroot - highly recommended, as you can eat leaves too
Radish - dead easy
Runner beans - against a wall or fence you can put bamboo or wires across
Dwarf french beans - no structure needed
Rocket - brilliant
Lettuce - so much tastier than shop bought
Tomatoes - though better in a greenhouse or conservatory

Not so great:
Carrots - hardly germinated
Spring onions - ditto
Potatoes - destroyed by slugs
Courgette - loads of water and feeding needed , not the most attractive plant, and courgettes I find a bit meh

Will only go with the top list for next year.
I think salad type foods are the best to go with, as they are so much better than what you buy due to freshness.

Also recommend growing some companion flowers for the bees e.g. borage (although quite invasive and gets huge) and marigold.
