Whitefly on my chilli plant?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 19/08/2020 14:03

Horrid little white flies have set up home on my chilli plant in the kitchen window sill. They had started to go on the window sill itself, and also my peace lily. Chilli plant is about two feet tall. Do I really have to clean each leaf individually to get rid? The leaves are quite sticky and I remember this being a biggish yucky task last time. Is there anything I can do to discourage whatever it is in the first place? TIA.

Hi, we get them in the greenhouse, natural predators are lady birds, but sometimes hard to come by.
In the greenhouse we put up sticky traps, bought from the garden centre. I guess you don’t want those in your kitchen, but you could try them.
As your going to eat the chillies it would be unwise to use a pesticide. You could try a washing up liquid diluted in water spray.
Other than that, how about putting the plants outside, when the weather is warm and dry. They might attract ladybirds.
Ours are outside at the moment, it’s healthy for the plant.

They might be aphids? If so, the soapy water trick may help. I bought a pesticide and it did a temporary job but they always quadrupled their numbers and killed off my plants. They don't like the cold too much (I think) so agree with Beebumble about putting it outside and hopefully luring some ladybirds over to gobble them up.

Thanks Bee and Rookie. Yes, they probably are aphids. I have put the plant outside anyhoo, whilst I decided what to do with it (procrastinating). Will try the spray, which sounds less icky than wiping each leaf individually. The other chilli plant in the conservatory hasn't been affected, so I'm wondering why that one's okay.

Either use a hose or take it back indoors and go to the bathroom. Give it a thorough (but gentle) shower. That should help wash the sticky stuff off.

Then it can go back in a spot sheltered from wind.

If they're little triangular white things that fly when disturbed, they're whitefly. I don't like the sticky traps because they're indisciminate, catching butterflies and lace-wings as well as whitefly. I usually vacuum clean them, using the upholstery brush, in the cool of the morning when they're less likely to fly at your approach.

Thanks all. They seem to have been showered off by the rain. They don't respond to me disturbing them, so I'm assuming aphids.
