Am I going to ruin a David Austin rose?

I'm in the middle of updating our bare patio garden. There's no hope of creating beds easily so have turned to pots.

I have my eye on the Claire Austin climber rose with some clematis running with it the president and Prince Charles I think. I have some metal trellis to add into the pot.

I have a large 130 ltr pot coming which is 70 cm wide by 50 or 60 cm I think. Is this going to be enough for all three together or should I pot the clematis separately and go for a three pot all together thing?

I should add this is my first garden and am very much learning as I go.

I have Claire Austin in the ground with a clematis running through. I would imagine they’d all be ok in a large planter. As long as you feed them from spring to Autumn.

I think it often looks messy to have them mixed up. why not have the rose in one pot and the clematis in another?

get a type 3 clematis that you cut down each spring so it doesn't grow far too big.

I bought a Claire Austin (well two actually) for a bed in front of a trellis. I bought them bare root and they were easily 50cm from root tip to planting depth and have grown a good few feet this season. I also have clematis planted in the same bed also. I chose a clematis that I can chop down to the ground each year as pruning one plant whilst it’s rained around another will be difficult. I would be tempted to put the rose in the largest deepest pot and the clematis separately if you can but close by so they complement each other. Can you attach the trellis to a wall rather than in the pot? Remember to get some trays for the pots to save watering.

I suppose I was just thinking the splashes of colour from the clematis would look nice against the Claire Austin.

I was also thinking it might cover some of the bare space at the base of the rose. Although I had also been considering some chives, alliums or petunias.

Hmm I hadn't thought about trays for the pots.

I was going to put the trellis near a wall but I can't attach it easily. Its 150 years old and not in great condition unfortunately and actually I'm not sure I'd be allowed as its shared with the local council.

I did buy two smaller pots and little trellises so could put the clematis in those beside it.

I would try it.

I have a David Austin Little Pet, gifted after our beloved dog passed away. I was sweating oh my gosh I can look after dogs but not feckin roses. It's amazing. So many instructions with the rose and on their site.

I smile every year it flowers.

Need to re-pot this year. Back to the sweating for next year!!
