Ground is usually best* unless your soil is very poor or you live somewhere where they won't survive the winter.
*but then I assume most people like me aren't very good at diligently watering pots and repotting at a suitable point.

They like acid soil so if you have bought a blue one and want it to stay blue you will need to put it in special compost.

They are reasonably robust, although it does vary by variety. Do you know which variety you have? If your soil is poor then you can dig the planting hole a little deeper and put some planting soil in the bottom (have a look in a garden centre, they will probably have recommendations). Then mix planting soil in with the soil from digging the hole and refill the hole Hydrangeas like a LOT of water. Water it well every day while it gets established, and don't plant it under anything that might block the rain, like an overhanging tree.

I think that they are harder to keep alive in a pot, mostly because of the watering situation. Pots dry out quite quickly.

I think they look best in a large terracotta pot. Need a lot of watering though

I have one in a pot outside the kitchen door. Close & in view for easy watering.

Hydrangeas respond to the acidity of the soil, so if you want the flowers to turn blue, add a teaspoon of vinegar when you water it 🙂

I have about 10 in pots. I use ordinary multi purpose compost and they remain true to the colour when bought.
Put the plant in a reasonably large pot, with some water retaining granules, if you wish. Stand it in a plastic Plant pot saucer, as this will provide a mini water reservoir. Give it a good drenching once a week and in the summer feed with tomato feed once a fortnight. In the Autumn stop feeding, otherwise it will put on soft growth.
