Cosmos not flowering

I've grown some cosmos from seed as I have before. They are lovely shrubby happy looking plants, but show no sign of flowering. Any ideas? They get lots of sun and I am watering regularly.

Hope you don't mind me jumping on the back of this, but mine won't flower either. They're lovely and bushy and I've pinched the tips out, but nothing...

I wonder whether they are in too rich soil or have been fed too much?
I've got a few in different places. Some self seeded and some grown from a packet.
Some are a bit ropy looking but covered in flowers others like yours very green and bushy but no flowers.
Those of mine that are flowering well are either in tubs squashed with other plants or on fairly poor soil.
I think the big bushy ones will flower later.

I’ve got a mix in one of my borders. One plant has been flowering for about a month and has grown massive and is taking over the place with flowers, one hasn’t flowered at all, one has the first flower and the other is flowering well but is not as rampant as the first one.

I love Cosmos, and grow them every year, because not only are they pretty, and bees love them, but they keep on flowering for ages as long as you deadhead them.

I do though find them quite temperamental. Last year, I grew a "pale mix" of Cosmos seed from Sarah Raven. Most grew and flowered fine, but there was one that just kept on growing, and growing, and ended up about 7' tall, but didn't produce any flowers, until September when it showed the most amazing shocking pink flowers. I tried to save the seed but failed.
Basically,I am sure they will flower, but have faith. I do find that some in a batch take ages to come into flower, but they do eventually, even though some in the same batch will have been flowering for ages.

Have you been watering them a lot? Mine went like this last year and when I investigated I found out that they flower best if they get dry?

Amymone · 09/08/2020 23:04

Me too! Last year they were amazing, this year...nothing except a couple of flowers. I think it's a funny year (on all fronts!)

Thanks everyone, at least it's not just me!!

Did you sew them a bit late? I did (seeds by post only arrived weeks after ordering). I think the earlier you sew them the best they do. And depends on the variety. I've had the Sonata ones before and got loads of flowers. This year I tried a new variety Rubies in Sunshine. One seemed about to flower and then a visiting cat bloody broke the main stem. They do have flowers coming but I would have expected them sooner if they'd been planted earlier.

They do like being dry but not too dry. They are temperamental. But lovely. I discovered'Cupcakes' last year. Soooo pretty.

Only some of mine are flowering and I have about 20 plants I've grown from seed. I googled recently and found they don't like to be over watered, we've had the wettest July on history here (Ireland) so that's probably it!

Franklyfrost · 10/08/2020 22:19

Read it today! For Cosmos a rich soil produces too much foliage.

I've got some cupcakes that I bought as plug plants and like others, they're growing well, nice & green but no sign of flowers, except one plant which had 2 flowers so far but no o sign of any others on it yet.
