These are off the tree in our garden. Just wondering what kind of apples they are

There are over 2,500 varieties of apples in the UK. Hope someone can help you!

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2020 21:59

I can't think of any reason not to eat it - afaik no apples are harmful outside of the tales of Eden and Sleeping Beauty.Grin
I doubt anyone can definitively ID the variety from a photo, other than it looks like an eating apple not a cooking apple. But if you don't like the taste or texture raw, you can cook any apple just that eaters don't mush up like cookers and need no or less sugar.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2020 22:00

Do cut it up rather than bite in though - home grown apples may be home to something!

chubbyhotchoc · 08/08/2020 22:03

Thanks for replies! Feel silly asking now! We did cut into it and had a taste. A little bit tart but I think you could probably make a decent crumble with them. There's hundreds of them out there. Seems a waste

It's only just August, maybe it's not fully ripe yet?
If so cook windfalls and leave the rest for longer maybe.

chubbyhotchoc · 08/08/2020 22:14

@ErrolTheDragon I literally no nothing lol

They look like eating apples, but I believe you harvest most apples around sept when the fruit has had enough time to mature. And they’ll be sweeter.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/08/2020 14:22

Apples ripen any time from August to about December, with most probably ripening Sept-November. The late ripening ones you pick in October-November before the frosts, and let them ripen in store. You can tell whether they're ripe because gently lifting the apple will cause its stalk to separate from the tree. If you're not checking daily, you'll know because instead of one or two "windfalls" (often of damaged fruit ripening prematurely) you suddenly get a whole dump of windfalls.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/08/2020 14:26

I'm not sure you can distinguish between cookers and eaters by sight. A lot of cookers are large, but there are some that aren't, and they're not all green, like Bramleys.

The mushing up when cooked seems to be a function of the variety - some cookers mush, some stay intact. Mushy ones are better for baking, ones that stay inctact are better for pies.

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/08/2020 14:26

How to tell if it’s ready to come off the tree:

Gently cup the apple in the palm of your hand and lift upwards tiny bit, if the apple is ripe it will come away with this upward motion. If you have to pull it harder than that, not ready

CorianderLord · 09/08/2020 15:15

Could be a crab apple - if so I'd cook before eating as they're v tart

Nah - Crab apples are tiny

chubbyhotchoc · 09/08/2020 15:26

Thanks for all the advice. I picked up the ones that had blown off the tree this morning and I've put them in a loaf cake. I'll let you know how it turns out!

@candycane222 lol well it broke coming out of the loaf pan but all goes down the same way with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. It was pretty darn delicious!

Good! There are so many things you can do with apples. If you get too many windfalls at once, I'd lightly stew them and freeze. Apples picked from the tree may be possible to store for at least a while (I seem to remember wrapping each in newspaper and the box going somewhere cool) but windfalls are nearly always bruised so best picked up and used one way or the other ASAP.

Oh my!! Don't suppose you've got any left have you???? Grin
