Ideal plant to block gap

We have a shed with a garden fence about 0.5 metres behind it, leaving a gap. As our back fence ends there’s no joining fence next door as it collapsed and they are doing nothing to get it replaced. This means our dog can get out of our garden. I want to plant something in the gap between the shed and the fence to provide a natural barrier. I don’t want something that will spread onto shed and fence (no ivy!). It will need to be tall enough to prevent dog jumping over (3ft ish) - although we will put some sort of barrier behind it as a last resort to contain dog!

Any ideas appreciated. Will need to survive in shady locations and be an all year round plant.

Any suggestions re

A mature Berberis or Cotoneaster would fit the bill and give you flowers in summer and berries in winter.
