Air plants

I love the look of air plants. I have a couple of terrariums and they look lovely when planted up with fresh plants.
However, I keep killing the bloody things! I've had a couple of batches now, a variety of types and they all end up drying up and dying.
I've tried soaking them in water and misting several times a week. I'm using rain water now after reading that hard water is bad for them.

What am I doing wrong? I thought these were supposed to be the easiest plants to care for?!

If anyone has any tips for how to look after them, or where to buy healthy specimens, I would appreciate it.

Whereabouts are you keeping them, in the shade or on a windowsill etc?

Out of direct sunlight, but in bright rooms.

I had some which I kept alive for over a year (eventually killed through forgetting to ever water them..) but while I managed to keep them happy I was only soaking them in water once a month and no misting or anything in between. Perhaps you're overwatering? Mine were in the kitchen so slightly humid atmosphere naturally. The kids had some in their rooms which died.

Oh, and mine were in a north facing window which gets direct sun only for the first hour or two of the day.

I have one in a bathroom which is is quite cool, and no direct sunlight. I submerge it in water (tap water), in a freezer bag, approx once a month. It's in a small hanging glass terrarium, and is a couple of years old now.

I know someone who hangs them above the shower, stuck to wooden plinths. They get a lot of moisture but she also sprays them with water.

Similar to bewarethedragon, no spraying or misting in between the monthly soaking here either.
