I'm not a gardener but noticed vines that suddenly appeared and started wrapping itself around all the plants! I initially just cut them or pulled them out but I realised its in every corner of the garden and grows back super fast! I googled it and realised it's definitely bindweed (have lots of the white flowers which I very stupidly thought were pretty plants!!). I feel a bit overwhelmed after reading about how invasive it is and how it will never go but can be kept under control possibly.

Any tips of where to begin?! I can see loads in next doors garden near ours, they don't seem to be bothered but I don't want to watch my plants get murdered and garden over run :(

Should i also knock next door and ask them if they're interested in tackling theirs too or AIBU to have an expectation/hope they will too ?

Know you know what they are and how to recognise them:

  1. Start pulling them out the instant they appear. Don't put them in your own compost bin.

or

  1. Encourage one to grow up a stick. Then spray stick and bindweed with a systemic weedkiller (glyphosate used to be the choice, but that is likely to be banned soon); over the next three weeks the weedkiller will be transported throughout the plants and will start to kill it. Don't let the spray get on to any other plants. You can put on a rubber glove, spray on to your hand and then stroke the bindweed.

The flowers are pretty, aren't they. But pretty problematic if they appear like that.

You can try having a friendly conversation as it would be better to get rid of all of it,or at least try to. Digging out the roots may help to reduce it but it does travel underground so can pop up anywhere.

I have a similar challenge and now I paint the encroaching shoots with Roundup Gel which is systemic and goes right down to the root and kills it. You don't need to touch other plants with it as long as you unwind it first.
I spent a long time getting rid of bindweed from my own garden so don't want anyone else's.
If you can keep it at bay it's a big help. I'm hyper alert to any new shoot now and patrol the fence regularly!

@meredintofpandiculation thank you!! I put in garden collection waste. I'll try the sticks and weed killer.

@campion glad to hear you are able to keep it under control, gives me hope! Will look into round up gel x

Another trick if you are using glyphosate is to unwind the bindweed from neighbouring plants, stuff it (but not the other plants) into a plastic bag and spray into the plastic bag. It'll look unsightly until the bindweed dies down but has the benefit of not risking drift onto the other plants.

Round up gel is one of the formulations of glyphosate.
