Fast growing climber help!

Had a disaster as my DH has chopped through the main stem for my rather well established (in coverage) clematis.

GAH!

I'll need to replace it - I'm not heartbroken as it's never flowered that well and is hard to keep in check. Wouldn't mind maintaining if it flowered.

The spot is dry and very sunny, even in winter.

I need something that will grow quickly to cover where the clematis currently is.

Ideally would have interesting, colourful leaves (esp in autumn) and a long flowering period.

Needs to be child safe, and bee friendly!

Any good suggestions?

Tempted by a clematis Montana, or a rambling rose of some kind but want sometime more interesting if possible!

You’ll probably find that the clematis regrows even stronger and flowers. They respond well to pruning. You mention the spot is dry and sunny. Clematis like their heads in the sun and feet in the shade.
I’d give it a good soaking, feed and put a good layer of compost around the roots. Then cover the root area with large stone or half a broken pot.
In a week or so you may see new shoots.

To add, this would not stop you planting a rose. Clematis are lovely rambling through roses.

@Beebumble2 it's had a hard prune before and no joy but I will do as you say and hope it revived. I think a rambling rose is a good idea, too!

I did what bumblebee advised and my clematis looks the best it ever has! My other suggestion would be blue passion flower, which is semi-evergreen and flowers beautifully from summer until October. It's vigorous and hardy.

I would second Beebumble2's observations, but an alternative might be Trachelospermum jasminoides which would fit most of the criteria you are looking for except for colourful autumn foliage

If you were to opt for a rambling rose, may I suggest 'Veilchenblau' which is thornless and, therefore, more child friendly?

Never underestimate the growth potential of a rambling rose. Mine all end up several trees away from where they were planted. In particular, avoid Kiftsgate, Rambling Rector. Bobby James.

Hard to beat Vitis coignetiae for autumn colour, but that too has growth potential - we're currently contemplating how to remove it from our neighbour's birch trees bearing in mind it's about 20ft up where it makes the step across from our trees to theirs. But the slightly pinky red each autumn is glorious.
