Hello,

Just that what is the best way to kill of Ivy, and to prevent it coming back?

Thanks

I cut it off at the roots, and keep doing so. Don't try to pull the cut part off walls or fences till it's died and lost its grip

Good luck with that! Dig it out and keep digging it out, pull off new growth and be vigilant. It has a habit of sneaking up the back of trees, fences, other plants if it gets the chance.
Can you tell I'm a veteran in the battle of the ivy?! The variegated stuff can look quite pretty if kept under control.

Cut it off at the base and dig out as much of the roots as possible. Use glyphosate weedkiller on the stump of anything which is impossible to dig up. I’ve also used weedkiller on it if small plants are growing on the walls between the bricks as it’s impossible to pull this out properly.

I absolutely loathe ivy so am something of an expert at getting rid of it.

It is coming from our neighbours garden.

We had this from our neighbour’s garden too - our gardener painted some of the ivy that was growing over our side with a weed killer, and a few weeks later, it died.

Baileys20 · 23/07/2020 09:22

Any idea of what killer the gardener used as I think a lot of the stronger ones are no longer available?

Ha we have the opposite problem, we've just planted some and trying to encourage it to grow!

WellTidy · 23/07/2020 12:24

No idea, sorry. It could very well have been something no longer available due to being so environmentally damaging. I didn’t see it, I just saw the ivy die away. And it hasn’t come back. No other plants nearby have died.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2020 13:59

I'd take a guess it was glyphosate, which is a systemic herbicide - paint it on the leaves and it should kill the plant down to its roots without killing other plants nearby. Afaik it isn't banned at the moment but it's got big question marks as to its safety.

Looking at a list of alternatives, it sounds like the only really effective one (other than digging/chopping relentlessly) is a flamethrower...probably not a good idea on a fence or wall!

If it's the neighbour's ivy you can't use a systemic herbicide unless the neighbour wants to be rid of it; not your plant.

TheNoodlesIncident · 23/07/2020 14:26

If it's not your plant, you can't use herbicides on it. You can only keep trimming it back to the boundary.

If possible do speak to your neighbour to find out how they feel about it, you might find they aren't very fond of it and would be OK about your taking more severe measures with it. On the other hand, they may love it and never smile again if anything happened to it, but you won't know the score if you don't ask...

I have just one ivy left in my garden, one of the variegated varieties, which are less vigorous than their green counterparts and less graveyardy I got rid of the rest as they were swamping everything.

ListeningQuietly · 23/07/2020 18:21

Cut at the base, make sure you remove sections.
Keep cutting.
Ask them nicely (fizzy wine helps) to pull it away from the fence a bit
so you get the best of the growth on your side

repeat every year

Thanks for the tips and will look into.
