Cucumber novice - and it shows!

I found these in the jungle that is the cucumber bed in the green house - I didn’t even know they were all there...I should have given them more room and grew less.

Anyway, I presume I’ve overwatered. There are still lots of very small cucumbers growing - how can I/can I still make sure the rest emerge in better shape?

I plan on using the bottom three in the photo - but I think the rest are destined for the bin.

What variety are the small ones? We've got Mini's and they only grow to 7cm. They look like ours!

Home grown cucumbers are better harvested small and lots of varieties just don't grow to the size of supermarket monsters.
Mine look much like those and taste fine.

They are all the same variety, they are ‘Iwa’. The large ones at the top are huge and yellow though - ones at the bottom are about 15cm and I ‘think’ they are how they should be.

We harvest ours between 10 to 15 cms and usually eat it all in a salad.
You could remove some of the leaves to let more light onto the fruit.

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/07/2020 21:28

I would at least taste the ones at the top before you bin them. They may have gone a bit bitter, but they may be perfectly fine.

You could also try cooking with them, when any bitterness would be undetectable among the other things.

Thanks everyone, removing some foliage for extra light sounds like an idea, as a novice I’m quite nervous about doing stuff like that, but nothing ventured...I was going to do some cucumber pickle - so I will get the husband to do a taste test (I don’t even eat cucumber!) with the big ones, just to check...it’s my first year...I’m still very much learning, great to have on hand some very knowledgable people.

I always peel my home grown cucumbers as I grow prickly ones with a thick skin. I don't see anything wrong with yours. The beauty of home grown is the difference in size, colour and shape!
If you're going to use them in pickles, I'm sure they'll be fine.
