Plant Identification help

Can anyone with a plant identification app help a technophobe to identify these plants please.

Bought as seeds on the Internet claiming to be mixed Fuchsias. They arrived in a clear bag and they look different to what I would expect and are growing rather rapidly.

I would just like to know if they are a type of Fuschia and if not what they are please.

Thank you.

They don’t look much like fuchsias to me, but maybe too early to tell. Did you buy them from China by any chance? If so, I very much doubt if they are what they say they are.

Harpischord · 09/07/2020 11:51

Nasturtiums?

Beebumble2 · 09/07/2020 12:34

Not Nasturtiums, they could be a type of Fuchsias. It’s hard to tell as they’re very immature.
I’d keep them in pots and see if they flower. I wouldn’t plant them out, they might be a pernicious weed.

MellowMelly · 09/07/2020 12:38

Looks like possibly Fuschia Fulgens style leaves. I had some of these and they produce more of a long droplet like flower. Very pretty is that’s what they are!

Pinkywoo · 09/07/2020 12:41

In the second picture they look a bit like lilacs?

FlowerOfTheValley · 09/07/2020 13:21

Nan - thanks yes they don’t look like Fuchsias I’ve seen before but maybe a variant. I think they did come through China so could be anything!

Harp - thanks but definitely not Nasturtiums.

Bee - I’m hoping they are some type of Fuchsia even if they’re different to what I was expecting. Yes I think I’ll just keep them in pots and see what happens. Thank you.

Mellow - thanks that would be good! I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Pinky - yes now you mention Lilacs the leaves are not dissimilar at this stage. Will see how they develop, thanks.

Seeds from China are notorious for being weeds/grass/veg, so I am dubious that you’ve got fuchsias there. The Chinese are infamous for advertising “rare” seeds, which often turn out to be cress.

FlowerOfTheValley · 09/07/2020 19:31

Nan - thanks they are certainly growing very quickly. I’m not confident they are Fuchsias but will wait and see if they flower then I may have a better idea.

It’ll be interesting to see what they grow into!

FlowerOfTheValley · 10/07/2020 11:55

Thanks Nan. If they flower I’ll post a picture.

Update - one has flowered. Not a Fuchsia! Not something I recognise, I suspect a weed. Any ideas?

Looks like garlic mustard to me. Something 'weedy'.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/08/2020 17:53

No, it's nothing like garlic mustard which is in the cabbage family and therefore has 4 petals in cross shape. It also has much smaller flowers, many of them together in a loose head, and flowers much earlier in the year.

I don't recognise that, and we could do with a better picture of the flower - closer, and with the focus on the sexual parts in the middle. Something about suggests potato family, but that is just a guess.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/08/2020 19:59

Looks like Chinese lanterns to me.

happy97 · 03/08/2020 20:05

My app says Japanese Lanterns

Morfin · 03/08/2020 20:16

Agree with above and have a picture of my Chinese Lantern young plant. I chose to put it in my garden as thought the lanterns looked like fairy hideaways blame sleep deprevation but they are a bloody weedy nuisance!

@Morfin yes, I keep mine in a pot!

FlowerOfTheValley · 07/08/2020 11:35

Thank you very much, definitely a Japanese Lantern. Different Fuchsia seeds next year! Thanks.
