These have sprung up all over our lawn - anyone know if they’re edible?

Haven’t a clue, but having been poisoned by wild mushrooms I wouldn’t risk it!

NanTheWiser · 08/07/2020 22:23

They are lawn toadstools, an indicator of a healthy lawn, and probably appearing to the wet weather. Never EVER eat fungi, unless they have been identified as edible by an expert. There are over 400 species of fungi, and some edible ones look very similar to poisonous ones.

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 22:25

Don't even consider it..

labyrinthloafer · 08/07/2020 22:29

This has made me feel panicky. No no no no no no no.dont eat any mushrooms unless an expert - in real life not anonymous online - says so.

Letthemysterybe · 08/07/2020 22:42

Don’t eat them.

pickingdaisies · 09/07/2020 06:08

You can't expect people to give you the go-ahead to potentially poison yourself based on a photo on their phones! Only eat wild fungi if you are very confident in your own ability to identify them.

PineappleTart · 09/07/2020 06:18

If in doubt - don't eat them

OP

I get ink caps on my lawn, from my research they are probably edible, but I'm not risking it and I think you should do the same.

loutypips · 09/07/2020 08:12

As much as I love mushrooms I'd only eat them if they come from a shop!

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/07/2020 09:26

I certainly wouldn't be looking at those photos and advising you to eat them. Nor would I eat them even if I identified them - they're not sufficiently unusual in form, it would be easy to mistake them for a similar species.

To identify them, an expert would look at the texture and spacing of the gills and how they attach to the stem, the colour of the spores, the thickness and texture of the flesh, whether it stains on breaking, what the mushroom looks like at different stages of maturity.

And if you're going to eat it, not only do you need it identified, you need to make sure that not one of the mushrooms it could conceivably be mistaken for is poisonous.

And even then, leave one out in an obvious place with a note for the ambulance crew.

(I wonder if those people who swear by plant id apps would be happy to eat a mushroom on the say-so of an app?)

Haven’t a clue, but having been poisoned by wild mushrooms I wouldn’t risk it! Ooh- do tell! What did you eat? What were the effects?

Sittinonthefloor · 09/07/2020 09:30

What everyone else has said! My neighbours were poisoned by mushrooms when a friend with a lot of experience in fungus id cooked them.

SoupDragon · 09/07/2020 09:33

If you have to ask the question here then the answer is no!

HermioneWeasley · 09/07/2020 15:47

So I’m hearing “maybe” 😆

Very sensible advice

Don’t be silly - if you eat a mushroom based on showing a few pics to strangers on the internet, you’re likely to end up very ill indeed.

If you’re really interested, get a good book and start with the ones which are not easily confused with any poisonous ones. There are quite a few of those, and they make good foraging and eating.

@Sittinonthefloor was that the famous person who ended up in the papers?
