Best weed killer please?

Novice gardener here. I need a recommendation for weed killer which will kill weeds on patios etc. I bought a huge tub of Round Up with the spraying wand and it has literally done nothing!

I’ve applied as directed, no rain since application, and I’ve gone over them again. It’s not even withered one leaf! Useless. What a waste of thirty quid!

What else can I use that will get results?

I just dig them up How big is the patio? small enough to cover with something so they die underneath and then you can just hoe them out easily?

SallyWD · 07/07/2020 13:14

I dig or pull them up. Roundup is full of really nasty chemicals that are harmful to humans and wildlife.

I bought a garden flamethrower for a tenner from eBay. It's very good - particularly at getting the annoying weeds growing through the cracks in the patio (plus it's lots of fun!).

Is the Round Up pelargonic or acetic acid based. I had good results with the second variety on harder surfaces. Digging, burning …; also works if you have the time.

get some ammonium sulphamate. It's not supposed to be sold as weed killer, but you can still buy it. It's a simple salt that degrades into harmless compounds, but should still be used with caution.

Flame gun .....
or just pull them up
or just accept that they are there and pull out the ugly ones leaving the pretty little ones

TheIckabog · 07/07/2020 14:18

Thanks for the responses. I would pull them up but we have a large driveway with small paved blocks and they are sprouting everywhere. More about being time poor/having a bad back to be able to clear it by hand, I had hoped weedkiller would do the job for me!

I like the idea of the flame thrower though! Is that an actual thing or are you pulling my leg?

Absolutely serious

Glass of wine in one hand
flame gun in the other

Flame throwers are real. Round up is poisonous. And using it can kill off all the bees over several miles. They bring the pollen of the spayed weed back to the hive and the whole hive dies. The soil remains poisoned for at least 5 years. It also is a known carcinogen.

safariboot · 07/07/2020 14:29

If it's glyphosate, which most Roundup-branded stuff is, then it can take a couple of weeks before it really shows. And in my experience you just end up with dead weeds that you still have to remove anyway. (But it's useful against stuff like brambles that will just grow back).

A long-handled hoe or weeder might work. Or a flame gun as mentioned. Or boiling water will kill weeds (but be careful not to splash it on yourself). Kills ant nests too if you need/want to do that.

Path and patio weedkillers usually have a long-lasting chemical in them to help prevent weeds coming back.

Boiling water also works really on weeds growing through paving stones. Boil the kettle and pour close to the root of the weeds

You could use one of these wire brush weeders for block paving www.worldofwolf.co.uk/product/wolf-garten-multi-change-weeding-brush/FBM~FBM?gclid=Cj0KCQjwupD4BRD4ARIsABJMmZ-dsOhpd_W8Y97u9NbJD5gABi51BHEbLEHkl8QXkISgMMiWhTQ3cGgaAs8CEALw_wcB I used mine this morning on my block paved drive.

A stout brush will work - it needs doing every few days
but its good exercise
has no chemical residues
or carbon emissions
and is wildlife friendly
