Revamping the front garden which is all lawn now. I'd like quite big borders and a couple of trees.

This will leave a bit of lawn about 2 m by 3 metres. And a couple of long thin grass paths.

I can't help thinking this will be a pain to keep looking nice.

Rainbow chard is a good winter choice of veg - green leaves with wide stems and midribs in white, yellow orange or red, look wonderful with the sun low in the sky .

What about a clover lawn? Doesn’t need mowing?

Thing is I'm not sure I can make a veg patch or a cutting patch look OK over the winter?
Brassicas, including sprouting broccoli, red cabbage and early planted broad beans etc. I know it's not the typical front garden, but they will be growing throughout winter and if you mix them up with winter/spring bulbs it will be different.
