Hi, does anybody know what might be eating the leaves of my red currant bush? The leaves are being totally stripped. And what if anything should I do about it? Thanks!

I reckon it’s snails. They’re ravenous and will strip leaves like that. Go out at night and check

Yeah snails I'd say x

Thanks, I do have lots of slugs and snails if I leave them to it - I wage a constant battle! But they've never touched the redcurrant bushes before...

Sounds more like saw fly, they eat gooseberry and red current leaves.
Nematodes are the best way to deal with them, as the larvae remain in the soil.
It’s better not to use pesticides, although they can be bought, because your putting it on a fruiting bush and to protect other insects.

Thanks @beebumble2 - I think you might be right.... I'll get some nematodes and see if that helps. They only fruited for the first time this year (after 3 years!), so I'd hate them to be weakened...

Could be sawfly too. Although I’ve had snails eat things that they previously left alone. If it’s sawfly you can just pick them off and squish them.

I find the snails in my garden will eat stuff that they don't normally if there's nothing else to eat, like when they're forced to they'd eat it but they'd prefer not to if there's other stuff there Confused
