Do you think there is any hope for my dahlia tubers?

Planted five or so dahlia tubers for the first time a month or so ago. There is no growth whatsoever above the ground in the places that I planted them. I haven’t dug down to see if anything is going on under the surface though.

Any hope, do you think?

I planted some a couple of months ago, I had given up on them but yesterday I spotted a shoot poking through. I’ve clearly planted them too deep because the cutting I took from another tuber a few weeks before is knee height already.

Never give up hope. I expect they are a little deep. One of mine sat in its pot for week before it decided to show some green, but it soon caught up with the others.

Ok, I will have some faith! Would you water them? A little? A lot?

One of mine is 30cm tall, the other is 0.5cm. I suppose they just come up at different rates.

I’d keep them damp, too much water and they might rot.

Noted, thank you!!

Dahlias do require patience. They are putting roots down at the moment. Then the leaves will appear. You will get flowers about late August which will last until the frosts.

I used to keep the corms, I think that's what they're called over the winter in a cool dark place. First time I planted them I put one or two in the ground upside down!
I was a complete novice to be fair, once I'd worked out which way was up, they flowered and were beautiful, I've lost them all now, thanks to a barn renovation.

I wouldn't put it past me to have planted them upside down! But I shall keep the faith and look forward to seeing some growth. I was late to plant them too.

I wouldn't put it past me to have planted them upside down! Credit them with some intelligence! The shoot will develop against gravity, so will work their way round the tuber and then upwards, the roots will go the other way. A bit more of a delay but that's all.

well that's me put in my place Grin Grin

sorry Mere and sorry dahlias Flowers
