Stone walled dyke

I'm a lazy gardener with not much time. I have a stone walled Duke I'd like to transform. What can I grow that is colourful in the little gaps in the wall? I like the wild-butterfly garden type look. Any suggestions? The cheaper the better! Thank you.

Dyke is the correct word & spelling in Scotland it's usually a dry stane (stone) dyke which is a small wall built by piling & balancing large stones to create a wall without the use of cement. This creates gaps between the stones where it's possible to grow small plants which I think is what the OP is proposing.

Report your post to MN @OhioOhioOhio and ask them to move it to gardening if you want gardening advice rather than puns and popcorn.

I clicked on this for the lesbian angle but now I’m here I absolutely recommend campanula - it grows well and the leaves stay green all year, and the bees absolutely love the flowers, ours seem to flower multiple times between spring and summer end,

I’ve been training ours over the wall for a couple of years now, and have it mixed with crocosmia in the beds, which makes for great architectural contrast as well as colour contrast (purple and orange are surprisingly pleasing).

@Musicalmistress thanks for that. I didn’t realize the spelling differed. Smile

Lots of different alpines to choose from, and some small varieties of Sedums.

Esspee · 04/07/2020 14:21

Wallflower and the right campanulas

MitziK · 04/07/2020 14:27

Native violets, hartstongue fern and suchlike would be nice, too.

@OhioOhioOhio

Sorry I thought it was in gardening.
We'll move it on over, to avoid any further confusion... Smile Flowers Daffodil

I knew exactly what it referred to, in Scotland it’s called a dry stane dyke and they are a common thing.

Wallflower, Nottingham catchfly (a pretty, delicate Silene). Red valerian (Centranthus ruber), stonecrop in white or yellow.
