Mountain ash

Has anyone else got this tree?
It seems absolutely rampant. Sprouting all over the garden and even through the wall. Any way of keeping it in check short of constantly chopping the branches down? It's not a very attractive tree either!

Are you sure it is a mountain ash? Otherwise known as a rowan. Mine doesn't sprout at all and is very slow growing. It has beautiful berries on it.

Of course beauty is subjective

Sure it's not a rhus which has similar leaves and spreads like wildfire with offshoots?

UnquietDad · 26/09/2007 14:38

OOh, you could be right. I'll have a closer look at the leaves...

I was wondering that too otherside. I've never known a rowan be that rampant but we did have a sumak that tried to take over the whole garden. Hated the bloody thing

I got a bit defensive because Mountain Ash is my favourite tree. Has been since I was 7.
I wish mine would grow quicker. It's only young because I planted 5 years ago when we moved in.

Sorry about the French link but I didn't know the English term for the plant I thought it might be.

I love it too otherside. My parents used to have a house in Scotland with rowan trees in the garden (they called it Ach na Caorann which means (roughly) Rowan field) and they had a boat called Rowan. They bought me a rowan tree for my birthday one year and it thrived - had to leave it behind when we moved though

Hallgerda · 27/09/2007 08:42

If it's a sumach, this may help.

UnquietDad · 27/09/2007 09:42

Ooh, thanks! Am convinced it is a sumach now.

Rowan is my fav tree also. Iam trying to grow one I got free in a pot. Have tiny garden.
My DD is called Rowan. Not actually after the tree, it was my DH's favourite girls name, but is fitting as my mum's name is Hazel and I have a tree related name.

Othersideofthechannel · 28/09/2007 05:52

Babyramone, my liking for the tree is because of my brother's name!

Was going to say Shumach. V.pretty autumn colour but watch out, the sap can burn skin.
