Lawn repair, are we doing this right?

Our lawn had become very patchy and hay-like, so about a month ago, we dug out all weeds and moss, raked all the dead grass off, and threw some seed down. After a fair bit of rain, there is definate improvement, although I would say more a revival of the old grass rather than the seed taking particularly well. If we do this again a few times through the summer, is there likely to be significant improvement, or if there something else we need to do at a different time?

Regular feeding will help. We have one of feeder things you attach to a hose. It’s made a big difference to our lawn.

It needs a good feed and then just leave it be. Grass seed needs to stay damp to germinate and can take a couple of weeks to do so. Keep it watered, fed and be patient. I did the same as you in April and this has happened

We put down a selective weed killer to kill the weeds yet doesn't harm the grass. A fortnight later, scarified the grass to remove the moss, thatch etc and used an aerator to stop soil being compacted and able to absorb nutrients better. Then we overseeded over any sparse bits of lawn and gave the whole lawn regular feeds. Put the sprinkler on in the evenings if it's not due to rain.
We now have an amazingly green and lush lawn. The only downside is it grows like bloody wildfire so needs mowing every 5 days or so.

Great advice thanks all. Sounds as though we are sort of in the right direction. How often is feeding needed? As we haven't done this. Once a week? Will look into getting an aerator too.

Seed needs to be in good contact with soil . If you use a spring tine rake to scratch the surface, then apply seed, it really helps if you can cover the seed with a light coat of Sandy soil or topsoil. If liquid feeding, every 2-3 weeks. If using granular, avoid weed n feed until the new seed is well established. Use a granular with a 1-2-2 ratio of NPK as you want the seedlings to put down good roots rather than make excessive top growth
