I really want a climbing rose but only have a patio

I have no where to plant one in the ground so it would have to go in a pot

Would it survive?

I’ve been looking at a David Austin New Dawn

Having done a quick squizz on the internet, it looks like it's not suitable for a container.

bluefoxmug · 23/06/2020 18:27

shrub roses do well in containers.
container needs to be large (20 l at least).
with climbers imbalance/toppling over would be a concern in a container. but other than that I can't see why.

JimandWilson · 23/06/2020 18:30

Yes we've had a potted climber that has survived a house move (had to chop it right back but it has grown back well). Give it a go!

MonsteraCheeseplant · 23/06/2020 18:33

Yeah you could get a planter with a trellis like this one. I bought it recently and highly recommend it.

From Trevor White's website www.trevorwhiteroses.co.uk/roses-ideal-for-container-growing/

Climbers With a Contained Habit Ideal for Containers
Anemone Rose
Bengal Crimson
Blush Noisette
Cumberland
Columbia
Narrow Water
Trier

I have New Dawn in a pot, and she's doing ok. I'm a bad gardener, so could probably do better.

Noflora · 23/06/2020 18:56

I meant to add for a container like Monstera has linked to.

David Austin site does say roses need a minimum of pot 45x45cm but does not recommend any climbers for a pot. You could work through the roses he does rec for a container and research whether they can be trained as a small climber. I have Sandringham (not DA rose) that can be trained like this. www.classicroses.co.uk/sandringham-shrub-rose.html

I’ve just planted Generous Gardener in a very large planter. It’s first year so just making growth. I’ll see how it does, if poorly then it will go in the ground.
I’ve also got Golden Showers in another planter. It seems fine.

KingOfDogShite · 23/06/2020 19:33

I don’t think New Dawn is a DA rose and you’ll be able to buy it elsewhere much cheaper ( I got one in B&Q). Climbing roses generally don’t do too well in pots, could you lift a slab?

Whitney168 · 23/06/2020 19:34

You're more likely to get away with one of the slightly less rambunctious ramblers - these are all 'short':

madcatladyforever · 23/06/2020 19:36

yes of course, you can have a climbing rose anywhere, David Austins are the absolute best of the best. I grow them up poles in large pots as I only have a large courtyard. There is a youtube video somewhere of how to grow them up a pole or stick.
They need at least 4 hours of sunlight.

Bowerbird5 · 23/06/2020 22:49

New dawn is a lovely rose. I planted it in my old house. Lovely colour and scent. Could you put some trellis up?

nearlynermal · 24/06/2020 22:34

PS: not pink, but the fabbest DA rose i ever had was the Pilgrim. Very floriferous, and a beautiful sherbet lemon yellow. But if you need advice just call DA and someone nice will advise you.

OhRosalind · 24/06/2020 22:41

We have a balcony and have lots of climbing roses in pots. Some DAs can be trained as small climbers (will be mentioned in the description) which makes them suitable for pots. We have Jude the obscure trained as a climber and some others whose names I forget!

SurreyHillsGirl · 24/06/2020 22:50

Our climbing roses are thriving in pots !

TheKickInside · 25/06/2020 00:08

Have a look at Peter Beale website 22 climbing roses suitable for pots

I read that with roses, it's the depth that matters more than the width of the pot, so get the deepest pot you can.

I have climbing roses in pots like these with a clematis in each as well, and they are thriving.

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/06/2020 14:02

@SurreyHillsGirl they look lovely! I have the same pots . Beautiful
