Something special for large pot (rose or other)

Seeking some exciting ideas! I have a large pot (50cm) in a shade of pale blue. Would like to plant something beautiful in it, possibly a standard or shrub rose, or some sort of small specimen tree (miniature cherry, tree peony or similar). I like pale / pastel colours rather than brights but equally something that looks nice in winter could be appealing. The garden is largely a mix of potted vegetables and flowers, the main trees and shrubs of note are a crab apple, lilac, mock orange, pink lavender, geraniums and some lilac and purple clematis. So far I’m liking the look of the Jacqueline du Pre or Ballerina roses but would love to hear others’ suggestions!

Difficult to get something for all year round impact and flowers, how about a camellia? The leaves are dark and glossy when not in flower.
I have a Rhododendron in a similar size pot, it’s just finished it’s spectacular flowering, now the leaves are interesting as a background for other plants in pots.

How tall is your pot? Roses have very deep roots so it is the height of the pot that matters rather than the diameter/width. The size of rose you can grow will be restricted by the depth.

If you want year round impact, you could have an obelisk and grow a summer and a winter flowering climber on it intertwined eg 2 clematis or a clematis and rose/jasmine.

You can't really beat Acers - Japanese maples. Foliage comes in a wonderful range of colours, particularly in spring and autumn. Bare in the winter though, but you can't have everything...

Thank you for the ideas.

@Beebumble2 In theory those suggestions sound ideal but I should have said I am not hugely keen on Camellias or Rhodedendrons (or Azaeleas for that matter, maybe I just have something against acid-loving plants!!).

@goingoverground the pot is about 50cm deep too so a decent size. I like the idea of growing two climbers. will have a browse for some inspiration.

@NanTheWiser I like Acers in the right setting but not sure one would look quite right in my garden.

Thanks again!
