New lawn, yellow turf...

I'm having my lawn returfed, the turf were laying on my pattio for a few days, the chap who is doing the job for me laid one half of the lawn which doesn't look too bad and then dug out the rest of the garden, laid new top soil and finally laid the rest today and it's yellow. I questioned it (but frankly I haven't got a clue other than it should be green surely🤔) he keeps saying give it a week and it will all be green, is he right???

I don’t think so. Did he keep it watered? Why didn’t he dig it all out then order and lay it fresh? That’s what mine did.

That doesn't look great!! But I'm no expert?!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/06/2020 20:46

Water it every night for at least 30 minutes. Take photos which proove how long you watered it for. If it doesn't start to look healthier within a week then ask for a refund or replacement turf. Summer is the worst time of the year to lay new turf tbh - it needs a hell of a lot of water.

Sakura03 · 17/06/2020 20:47

It was very wet and it very thick if that makes sense. You see that is what I don't get either, surely that would have been the most logical way to do it... but what do I do?

Sakura03 · 17/06/2020 20:49

Chicchicchicchiclana he has told me that I will need to water it for the first two weeks (weather depending)

TwigTheWonderKid · 17/06/2020 20:51

Nooo, turf needs to be laid immediately - within 24 hours at the absolute most. He should have prepared the ground in one go and then laid it all at the same time, the day it was delivered.

Did he leave the spare turf rolled up or spread out, and did he tell you to water it?

Sakura03 · 17/06/2020 20:51

allfalldown47 no it doesn't, certainly not what I expected!😫

Hmm. Oh dear, if it's already very wet then I don't know what to think.

Zoomintheroom · 17/06/2020 20:52

Yellow turf will go green again but that actually looks bare in places. I wouldn't be happy with that at all and wouldn't be paying him the full amount until you are sure it is going to recover. He shouldn't have ordered the turf until he'd done the prep.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 21:02

That’s awful op. Tell him to pull it up, get fresh stuff and relay, that might come back but not any time soon. It should all look like the first half.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 21:02

It’s not even laid properly, what a mess.

FrostyGirl66 · 17/06/2020 21:07

How long had it been rolled up? It looks like it's gone that colour because of its lack of sunlight.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 21:16

If that comes back it won’t be any time soon, it will be months and months. And that’s not just yellow that’s bare, it’s dead.

You can’t pay for it,it is not even fitted properly with the big gaps At the edges,.

When we had ours done the men prepared the ground and then when it was all done, the turf was delivered first thing the next morning and then all laid that day,

That turf needs to come up and new stuff put down.

chateaudekaleidoscope · 17/06/2020 21:19

I had a large patch of my front lawn go yellow from the last heat wave then the heart rain came a week ago and it's nearly back to normal. But I would expect new turf to not be in that bad a condition.

12345ct · 17/06/2020 21:37

Grass is very resistant and should come back but will need a lot of watering and sunlight but I wouldn't pay full price for that even the shops sell turf rolls for £1.00 each when they have gotten to that state.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 21:50

Gras is resilient when it’s laid and taken hold. Turf is not resilient, if it’s dead before it’s even laid the odds are it will not come back.

Op, I’ve hope you’ve not paid him? If not tell him you’ll pay him when it turns green.

Then get someone else in to replace it.

Sakura03 · 17/06/2020 22:29

Really grateful for all the comments and advice. I’ve paid just under half of the total quote so far and he is meant to do a horizontal fence for me as well.
Do I just tell him that I’m really not happy with it, in the end of the day I’m paying for a green lawn and I want him to relay new turf or I won’t pay for the job? Sorry I’ve never had to do this before and hate confrontation, however, it’s my hard earned money and I know I have a right to assert myself. If he keeps saying give it a week and it’ll turn green, would you agree to that but withhold payment until then? Or just not even consider this an option?

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 22:31

That’s what I’d do, I’d say to him it looks dead and I’m concerned, however I’m willing to take your advice, if it turns green in a week as you say , I will pay for it immediately but if it doesn’t then I expect it to be redone.

It’s not going to turn green in a week. It’s not even going to turn green in a month.

Sakura03 · 17/06/2020 22:40

Bluntness100 thank you, I’ll put it across to him in the morning. It’s so disappointing looking at it😞

Hi OP. We had new turf laid in our garden on Friday last week. I've attached a picture of what it looked like when it was laid. The colour is the same today. We were told you 'can't water it too much' and have bought some sprinklers that we put on at regular periods throughout the day for an hour at a time (about 3 - 4 times a day). The regular watering is definitely keeping the grass healthy and will encourage the roots to bed down into the earth.

We've been strictly told to avoid walking on the grass for the next two weeks otherwise it could become uneven and when we first cut it (in 2-3 weeks time) to put the lawnmower on the highest setting so that it barely cuts the grass.

Personally, I would challenge the supplier and withhold the remaining money until you have the result you expect. If you water it as much as we are and in a week the grass is green then fine, but if not I'd ask for the turf to be replaced.

liquoricecravings that's exactly the same advice Ive been given by the chap who is doing the job for me and he picked up a sprinkler for me. I'd just be amazed if it'll only take a week to turn green I just can see that happening...

This is ours on day 1. I would definitely withhold the rest of the payment. We were given really precise instructions on how and when to put it down for the best results. It looks like he's left it rolled up for too long 😔
