Conifer help!

Hello,

Basically we have been tidying up the garden like most of us in these times. We have had our conifers cut, they were way out of control and we wanted them tidying up for our side and the neighbours.

An hour into cutting the bloke explained it would be a lot better to cut them down to half, i rang my partner (bearing in mine we are literally learner gardenrs we have only just started getting interested etc) my partner agreed if that is what they needed then to go ahead.

In the end we have been left with extremely SPARSE BROWN twigs half the size it all was. Can someone please give us some hope and tell us they will grow back very soon??????? Please xx

Sorry, I wish I could. But if they've been cut further back than the green growth, then they won't regenerate.

Lilmissmissy · 16/06/2020 12:42

Oh dear, Had a look this morning they still have greenery on them they just look so sparse xx

Yes they wont regrow, mine has lost all of one side and I should take it down but I'm suspecting that it has good soundproofing properties and our neighbours are really noisy.

Oh no! Spent most of last night crying as we have lost so much privacy due to it. I only asked for them tidying up too x

I don’t really understand your complaint, he said to cut them down by half, you agreed, so of course they are now half the size and you’re only left with the bottom half, which you could visibly see?

Conifers can’t grow back from brown wood but look at the ends, if he’s left greeen, which he has, they will grow back and quickly too.

Depending on the type they grow about two foot a year.

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2020 20:10

Yes they wont regrow

Yes they will he’s left green at the ends of the branches. They’ll be at least two foot higher this time next year, sounds like he knew exactly what he was doing. They always look shit when they are cut back.

If the conifers are Lelandii then they will probably regrow. They are a tough plant that easily grows too big.

The green bits will regrow. And you could grow a climber up anything that isn't re-growing.

Gardens are very resilient. At the start of lockdown I had some old trellis down the side of our garden replaced by posts with wires to train stuff on. I had to cut down virtually everything to allow access, and went instantly from completely enclosed to a clear view for everyone using the public ground adjacent. But I know tht by next year it'll be a dense covering again.

I have never said anything about complaining. I was just shocked at the difference and was just asking for peoples opinions on if they will grow or not.

Thank you for your replies xxx
