DIY Pergola

DH & I have decided we want to build our own pergola. A very budget, non-fancy small-ish pergola. We thought, as it’s going in a corner so to speak, we’d only need the one post in the outer corner as support, the fencing being the other support, if you know what I mean. What type of wood is best used for this? Any tips? It’s to fit a space no larger than 6x6 ft.

Pressure treated sawn timber from any diy store. Pressure treated means it’s preserved to last longer outdoors. Sawn is a rough finish rather than planed, which is smooth (like skirting). It’s the same stuff as fence posts etc.

You can buy a metal post holder to attach to concrete, or concrete it into the ground directly (but add extra for height if so).

Screws not nails, so you can undo it easily if you need to alter it or take it down. I hate nails!

Screws not nails, so you can undo it easily if you need to alter it or take it down. Vaseline them first to delay rust which makes them hard to get out.
