Ideas for tall airy shrub bamboo like but not

I have just had a crab apple tree removed, it was far too near the house and was starting to cause issues to the pitched roof. Anyway we are on a corner plot and the back of the neighbours house over looks our garden, the tree screened a lot of the view and I need something to take its place. So ideally at least 10ft tall but quite slim. I have looked for ideas but just don't know what to google. Many thanks

That’s tricky, as crab apples are often recommended for small gardens! Amelanchier and Rowan are as well, but would reach a similar size. Perhaps a dwarf or “patio” apple or cherry tree? You can get ones that will stay at around 10ft.

Otherwise, a pergola with climbers might do the same job, or even an obelisk as it’s a narrow space.

I loved the crab apple but we build an extension after the tree was planted and it is just too close.

It was more the spread than the height that was the problem but thanks for those suggestions.

We've got a fuchsia with small white flowers that would happily grow to 10' if I let it. I cut it down to the ground each year and it's already well over 6'. It isn't a compact bush but tall stems.

That sounds lovely sorryiasked! Do you know what variety it is? (Sorry if this is a derail!)

Buddleia would do it, they are airy tall and controllable.

The other thing is a camellia tree, but they are slow growing so you need deep pockets to buy a mature one.

A trellis with climbing roses would also do it.

Dogwood?

sorryiasked · 05/06/2020 14:59

I've googled and think it's probably Fuchsia 'Magellanica Alba'

For the op - I have a multistemmed lilac that’s quite airy and narrow - I keep it that way by cutting about 1/4 of the stems down low each year! Might be another option.

My mum and dad have a few silver birch trees in pots to give exactly the screening you describe - their growth is seriously limited in a pot but you still benefit from the silvery bark and light, airy foliage.

Thank you all, I'm off to google and feeling a little more hopeful of finding something
