Plants suitable for where there is no soil

Is there such a plant that will be fine in nearly no soil and full sun?

I have a retaining wall built in the garden that the previous owners built and the top looks like a plantable trough.

However, it’s only 1 course of bricks deep at the top!

So far it s just had decorative stone in it , but it looks a bit shit without anything planted in it

Buddleia. That seems to find a foothold pretty much anywhere. There's some growing on the roof of a warehouse opposite where I work.

Houseleeks / sempervivums.

Aubretia, it will cascade down the wall eventually.

ClassicCola · 02/06/2020 18:08

I second Aubretia it always looks pretty cascading down a wall.

Erigeron. It literally grows in cracks.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 02/06/2020 18:11

I wouldn't plant buddleia, it's roots will end up ruining your wall.

NanTheWiser · 02/06/2020 18:15

Sempervivums, they are able to grow in virtually no soil.

Agree with aubretia or any of the alpines which need very little soil, like thrift, campanula, diascia etc.

This deal might get you started.

Saxifrage Urbium known as London pride grows across my paths, as does creeping Thyme.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/06/2020 21:53

Erigeron! It's made for that situation.

RoobyMyrtle · 02/06/2020 22:04

Lavender. It's growing out of a tiny hole in my house wall so I assuming it will grow anywhere 😬

Rebelwithallthecause · 02/06/2020 22:20

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden Erigeron looks perfect! Thank you

Lewisia.

I have a wall with a shallow trough at the top - in the sunny end of it I have perennial candytuft, sedum anglicum (white stonecrop), hyssop, aubretia, trailing rosemary, lavender, golden leaved marjoram, sea pink, snow-in-summer (and I used to have a rock rose which did very well but had to moved to make way for a gate)). In the less sunny end I have lady's bedstraw, Notiingham catch-fly and wallflowers.
