Houseplant help

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to keeping houseplants but I would love to get some and I’m trying my best to learn how not to be a plant killer...

I’ve just bought a Calathea plant and pot and think I have made the mistake of planting it straight into the pot (which doesn’t have a drainage hole). Will it die if I leave it in there? I was thinking about taking it back out, putting lots of pebbles and stones in the bottom and putting it back in again but I’m worried about messing around with the plant too much and causing more damage! What should I do?

It will definitely need drainage holes. Why not put it back in a proper plant pot and then put into the decorative one without the holes. Don’t over water, the soil should be just moist to touch between watering.

Yes, I think you need to put it back it the pot it came in.

The outside pot is just decorative, which is why it doesn’t have drainage holes. It will die of you leave it in there. Water it twice a week or so, maybe more often right now as it is warm, and give the leaves a little spritz too.

Whilst not ideal I have various house plants that I have put into pots without drainage, I'm careful not to over water and they are all thriving.

Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll try and put it back in the original pot and then in the decorative pot... determined not to kill this one!
